About Kollam
Known as Kollam in Malayalam language, also known to the Portuguese as Quilon, Pronounced as Koy-lon is a City and a Municpal Corporation located in the Kollam District in the Indian State of Kerala.
It is sited, 71 Kms north of Thiruvanathapuram, the capital of Kerala.
It is also the headquaters of the Kollam district, one among the 14 districts of kerala. It is bound by Trivandrum District in the South and by Pathanamthitta and Allapuzha in the north, while the East is bound by TamilNadu and the West by the Arabian Sea .
The town of Kollam is very famous for Cashew Processing and Coir Manufacturing.
It is also a very Prominent Tourist Destination, as it also the southern gateway to the Bbackwaters of Kerala.
Kollam was also formerly called “Desinganadu”
During the Travancore Kingdom rule, Kollam was Most Focal Point of Trade in Kerala. The Start of the Malayalam Era, also known as KollaVarsham in malayalam, is associated with Kollam.
It is believed that the era was started by Nestorian Christian Merchants who settled in KorukeNi Kollam, near to the present Kollam.
